"Notice of Violation Served..."

Tainted Chinese formula and Salmonella-laced peanut butter have food safety on everybody's mind.

But what about the stories that don’t make the front page? What about the grocery stores right here on the Upper East Side?

Here are the facts: In 2009 alone, Agata & Valentina has been cited for six violations of New York City Health Code. Three of these violations were considered "critical," while another was classified as a "public health hazard."

What kind of violations got the attention of city inspectors? Dead roaches in the pastry kitchen, "potentially hazardous food" held above safe temperatures, and mouse excrement in the refrigerator.

To make matters worse, inspectors found these violations just a few months after they instructed Agata & Valentina to get its act together. Just last September the City found mouse excrement in a food storage area, "potentially hazardous food" stored below safe temperatures, and live roaches crawling on the wall.

What happened to Agata & Valentina?
